What And Where To Eat In Cambodia

Cambodian cuisine is all about nutrition and simplicity. It is a complete meal in the sense that it includes soup, salad, vegetables, rice and dessert. This is possible because Cambodians are simple people who lead ordinary life and enjoy their food to work harder and longer. Rice and fish are the staple in the Cambodian diet and both feature prominently in everyday food. Notably, the Tonle Sap and Mekong rivers are the two main sources of fresh water in the country. These rivers help in irrigation and cultivation of rice as well as ensuring the availability of fish throughout the year.

Cambodia is famous for its Khmer food which has been influenced by several cuisines. Interestingly, Cambodia was once a French colony and later millions of Chinese immigrants made it their home. As a result, French and Chinese influence on the Cambodian cuisine can be easily identified. In addition, the cuisine has been influenced by Vietnamese and Thai cuisines to a considerable extent.

Seafood in this region is both distinct and unique. People prepare these delicacies in different styles such as European and Japanese. Some of the common Khmer preparations include Amok – a catfish curry, Namchuk – sticky rice served with coconut, Samla Mchou Kroeung Sach Ko – sour beef soup and Sngao Chruok Moan – chicken soup served with herbs.
