South Korea

Seoul

For daytime sightseeing, Gyeongbok-gung is the grandest of the city’s palaces, with two museums also housed on the extensive grounds. Shopping is a Seoul specialty, and visitors looking for high-end electronics will do well at the Youngsan Electronics Market, with over 5,000 stores, and the two Techno Marts, each of which houses over 2,000 stores. Nightlife is particularly lively, with bars, all-night eateries, live music and dance clubs that range from hip hop to ballroom. Do not pass up a chance to visit a noraebang, karaoke done Korean-style and very popular with locals.

Busan

Korea’s second largest city is noted for ancient temples in breath-taking surroundings and a beautiful seaside locale. Top temples include Beomeo-sa, nestled in the mountains, and Yonggung-sa, perched atop a rock overlooking the sea. For daytime relaxation, visit one of the city’s several beaches and hot springs, including popular Haeundae Beach and the Hur Shim Chung Spa, Asia’s largest hot spring spa. At night Busan glitters with lights, a thriving café and a bar scene that ranges from upscale cocktail lounges to German-style beer bars to neighbourhood rice-wine hangouts.

Cheju City

The island of Cheju (Jeju) off the southern coast is South Korea’s top destination for honeymooners as well as for international tourists. With lush vegetation and a mild year round climate, it is very reminiscent of Hawaii. Enjoying the romantic beaches and sightseeing excursions to hike, trail ride on horseback, or view the stunning waterfalls just outside Cheju City are favourite activities.  Clubs and bars are largely Western-style, catering to visitors and located in and around the hotels and casinos.
